How to Create a Bootable Drive with BalenaEtcher

You might be wondering why you need to learn how to create bootable media. Understanding this skill can be invaluable, as it not only allows you to install operating systems and recover data from non-functional devices, but also equips you to troubleshoot and fix issues with your computer.

By learning how to create a bootable media, you will gain greater control over your technology, ensuring that you can quickly address problems as they arise, whether it’s for personal use or to assist friends and family.

I will show you how to use BalenaEtcher in this case, but feel free to use any other software of your liking to create bootable media. Keep in mind that BalenaEtcher does not work with Windows images.

Downloading BalenaEtcher:

The Etcher is free for anyone to download. I will be showing you how to download it on a Mac, but installation should not be too different from other Operating Systems such as Windows or Linux.

  1. Download BalenaEtcher.
  2. Choose the appropriate option and click download.
  3. Double click the downloaded file.
  4. Drag BalenaEtcher to the Applications folder.
  5. Find the newly installed app on your Applications folder and double click it.
  6. You may see a warning window asking you if you are sure you want to open the app. Select “Open”.

Creating a Bootable Drive:

After successfully installing the Etcher you can follow these steps to create a bootable drive:

  1. Open up BalenaEtcher.
  2. Select “Flash from file”.
  3. Choose the ISO image you downloaded.
  4. Click on “Select target” and choose your USB.
    Note: the USB selected will be formatted and all information inside it will be deleted.
  5. Select “Flash!”.

You now have a bootable USB drive. With this new skill, you can now try out different Operating Systems, allowing you to explore various environments and functionalities that each system offers. Diagnose and troubleshoot issues more effectively by becoming familiar with the unique interfaces and tools available across platforms.
